Thumbs-up and a friendly smile from a stranger. The beginning of another travel-story: the first meeting with the Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi in Florence. It was mid-September 1944, and I was still in Germany with the V. Day School of Languages, which was now headed by his German pupil Raul Hilberg, and was living in a building that had been built for the purpose by a certain professor at an English university, Professor David Robinson. I had been told about Dr. Robinson by my friend the translator Liza Moller, who had been with me during the summer and who was now the school’s coordinator.
