I just got back home and have been in touch with some friends from the New York and Los Angeles bureau over on Facebook to warn that similar incidents are likely. They said they had heard from friends that a young black woman had been mugged on the subway while traveling with a girl of color; however, they weren’t sure what happened except the girl was crying and saying goodbye as she boarded the train; I got wind of what happened and called 911, but they wouldn’t take me in. I guess they were just tired of being wined and dined.

On the subject of being wined and dined, at some point I decided I needed to find a few things to bring. So I asked the lady about renting them. She just looked at me through the Plexiglass and said I’d have to register with them.
