A little over three weeks ago, I took a train from London to the Irish border.
On this night, in the dark, I reached a small village in County Down.
It’s a few miles from the Irish border, down a country road that crosses the bridge across the Irish sea – and which now I have come on a motorbike to explore.
I had spent the night in a small village called Loughrigg a few miles up the road and had found it easy to sleep when my head was clear.
But once, at dawn, as my bike crunched over the pebbles of the bog near my bed, I looked up to see that the landscape was full of stars.
‘Yes,’ I said, ‘that’s Ireland.’
This was two weeks ago. It had been two weeks and two days since I’d cycled to the border.
The following morning, I trudged back to the border. I found the road…
