The beginning of another travel-story: A few years ago, I was going about my morning activities in southern California in a neighborhood grocery store — a small, mostly Latino community — and some man entered the store and sat with his back to me. He appeared to be in his seventies, with silver hair and a face that held a sort of old-timey dignity. I did my best to ignore him, but it was clear he was interested in my activities. He was checking out and trying to get more information about the items in the store, in what seemed to be a somewhat hazy, almost distracted way. But the minute I started to put some things together about our recent trip to the United States, all hell started breaking out.
